“But I live” Graphic novels about the Holocaust in historical education – Politik & Kultur Article – May 21, 2023

Our project partner, Dr. Andrea Löw, wrote an article examining  graphic novel representations of the Holocaust and the creation process of ‘But I Live’. The article was first published in the Politik & Kultur: Newspaper of the German Cultural Council on April 28, 2023, and later included in Issue 5, Comics: Graphic Literature in Focus on May 21, 2023.

“In their sensitive and at the same time impressive “graphic narratives” it becomes very clear how the past and the present are constantly intertwined, how memory blurs but is always present. And even diverging memories, as in the case of the brothers Nico and Rolf Kamp, or missing memories – Emmie Arbel says several times: “I don’t remember” – can be sensitively addressed in this medium without exposing the survivors.”

Dr. Andrea Löw is deputy director of the Center for Holocaust Studies at the Institute of Contemporary History in Munich and teaches at the University of Mannheim. Learn more about Dr. Löw on Our Team page.
