Western Canada Jewish Book Awards 2023 – Winner!

On May 24, 2023, ‘But I Live’ was announced as the winner of The Kahn Family Foundation Prize for Holocaust category at the 2023 Western Canada Jewish Book Awards.

The awards ceremony took place at the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre (VHEC) in Vancouver, BC, with Dr. Schallié accepting the award on behalf of the team, and expressed her gratitude:

We are so honoured and grateful to receive this award! Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, to the jurors and the Cherie Smith JCC Jewish Book Festival in Vancouver! Our work together would not have been possible without the strength and resilience of our participating survivors Emmie Arbel, Nico and Rolf Kamp, David Schaffer–and without the huge support of our community partners: the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre (VHEC), the Ravensbrück Memorial (Fürstenberg/Havel; Germany), and the Anne Frank House (Amsterdam; the Netherlands). We are also deeply indebted to Dr. Robert Krell’s groundbreaking work in Holocaust education and testimony collection.

Last but not least, we are privileged to work together with an immensely dedicated team at the University of Toronto Press: the most wonderful Natalie Fingerhut and her colleagues, Chris Reed, Anna Maria Del Col, and Adina Saban.
